When World War I began in August 1914, lasting until the Armistice of November 1918 as the "Great War" whose vast casualties and general horror were widely seen as creating a situation in which it must surely be the "war to end all wars", it marked a time of radical departures. Although not appreciated at the time, it signalled the end of the Victorian and Edwardian periods in which the European nations had led the world, saw the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, began the fatal weakening of the British and French empires, and effectively intro-duced the concept of total war in which industrial strength and production were as important as the manpower of the armed forces, and civil populations as much as armed forces became legitimate targets of attack
