Del Prado SNC074 Officer, Austrian Cuirassiers

Austrian forces were at the forefront of the wars against Napoleon for 22 years. Most of Austria's military commanders used their limited resources cautiously, which is more than can be said for the Austrian Emperor.
In April 1809 Francis I, with a new-found confidence in the efficiency of his armies, without seeking allies, and seeing himself as the German champion, had declared war on France. The declaration was not unexpected, for Austria's feverish rearmament had only one aim. On 5 July the Austrians were defeated, yet again, at the battle of Wagram. But it was a hard-won fight, and the Austrians had proved a formidable foe. Although they lost 36,000 men, Archduke Charles marched off the field with over 80,000 men in good order. There was no pursuit and no rout.
