Del Prado SNC027 Jean-Auersradt/Marshal Davout, French Cavalry, 1806

As he had shown at Austerlitz on 2 December of the previous year, Napoleons belief in the all-importance of the big battle was fundamental to his concept of waging war. He also aimed to achieve the decisive blow at the earliest possible moment in a campaign. Swift, short and decisive were three basic principles in his concept of what a later age would term blitzkrieg warfare. No better example of Napoleon applying these principles can be found than the campaign he waged in central Europe against Prussia in late 1806. The military events that took place during the 33 days of active campaigning from 9 October to 10 November that year constitute a military masterpiece of the first order, which added yet more lustre to Napoleons reputation.
