Del Prado SNC003 General Bonaparte at Rivoli, 1797

The French Revolutionary Wars were divided into two distinct periods, organized around the War of the First Coalition (1792-97) and that of the Second Coalition (1798-1802), each with its own combination of European powers, most notably the Austro-Hungarians. Frances enemies expected a quick and decisive victory, but at the end of a decade of continuous fighting, the fact that France had strengthened her position was in no small part due to the military successes of the up-and-coming general, Napoleon Bonaparte.
A Corsican-born student of artillery, Bonaparte rose from captain to brigadier-general on the strength of his successful plan for recapturing the Mediterranean port of Toulon, Frances biggest naval base, which had raised the Bourbon flag in 1793. He went on to perform well in Italy in 1794 but his destiny was not truly shaped until he used his cannon to save the Revolutionary.
