Napoleon once remarked that without cavalry, battles were without result, and while this might be an exaggeration, his force of cavalry represented an absolutely crucial element in the system by which his army operated. Without cavalry, the armys reconnaissance facility would have been reduced almost to nothing, convoys could not have been escorted adequately, on the battlefield, much of the armys offensive power would have been negated, and the pursuit of a retreating enemy would not have been possible to anything like the necessary level.
