Del Prado SNC044 General Blucher, 1813

Gebhard Leberecht von Blcher (1742-1819) was born at Gross-Renzow near Rostock, a Baltic port, on 16 December 1742 and was brought up in Mecklenburg. His family had been landowners in northern Germany from at least the 13th century, and his father was a retired infantry captain.
His military career began at the age of 15, when he obtained a commission in the Swedish army as a hussar. It was by no means unusual for Germans to serve in the armies of other nations at this time, Blcher was one of many foreigners in his regiment, which consisted of Germans, Poles and Swedes. Orders were as in many armies at this time given in German, the supra-national language of Central Europe, and the squadrons were drilled after the Prussian Regulations.
