One of the most influential figures in world, and particularly European history, Charlemagne began his legacy as King of the Franks in 768 eventually conquering, uniting, and ruling great swaths of Europe. He was eventually crowned emperor in Rome – the first western Roman emperor in 300 years and the precursor of the line of Holy Roman Emperors which continued into the 19th century. Conquering and Christianizing much of western and central Europe, he is considered Europae Pater, the Father of Europe. His political, military, religious, and educational reforms and statutes would inspire those after him, continuing to shape Europe, and the West, for generations.
