The Louisiana Tigers were among the most colorful and feared Confederate infantry units of the American Civil War. Recruited primarily from New Orleans, they comprised rough, diverse men - including dock workers, gamblers, and foreign-born immigrants and were known as much for their rowdy behavior as their battlefield ferocity. The name originated with Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat's 1st Special Battalion Louisiana Infantry. Fierce, undisciplined, and utterly fearless, the Louisiana Tigers became legends of Confederate arms.
