The 1st United States Sharpshooters (Berdan's Sharpshooters) was an elite Union regiment authorized in 1861, led by Col. Hiram Berdan to act as specialized light infantry. Recruits had to place 10 shots in a 10-inch circle at 200 yards, often using breach-loading Sharps rifles and green uniforms, serving as a precursor to modern snipers.
