Del Prado SNC041 Officer, French Hussars, 1807

Napoleons hussars consisted of only 14 regiments during the Empire. Six existed well before the reorganizations of 1791, the 7th and 8th were raised in 1792, the 9th-11th in 1793, the 12th in 1794, the 13th in 1795 and finally, the 14th in 1814. They were composed of four squadrons, each comprising two companies, which in turn consisted of two troops.

The hussars made their first real impact in 1806 with their astonishing pursuit of the Prussians after the Battle of Jena for over 1,000km from the river Saale to the Oder. On 29 October General Lasalle capped this feat when 500 of his men from the 5th and 7th Hussars bluffed the 6,000 strong Prussian garrison at the fortress of Stettin to surrender and hand over 160 cannons.
