Del Prado SNC106 Trooper, British 1st Royal Dragoons, 1814

The battle of Vitoria, 21 June 1813, was the highlight of Wellingtons bold offensive that had begun in May 1813. His defeat of King Joseph and his chief-of-staff Marshal Jourdan proved to be the decisive action of the Peninsular War and the liberation of Spain now remained only a matter of time. By now, French troops had been driven out of southern and central Spain, and the only garrisons remaining held the northern cities of San Sebastian and Pamplona.

The political implications of Wellingtons victory at Vitoria were great. After his disastrous campaign in Russia during 1812, Napoleon had wasted no time in raising a new army and had invaded Germany with half a million men in the spring of 1813, notching up successes at Ltzen (2 May) and Bautzen (20 and 21 May) and capturing Dresden.
