The new Sphinx from Thomas Gunn is a striking figure, complete with spear, the head and upper body of a woman and the lower body of a lion.
When we think of the Sphinx we mainly think of the Great Sphinx of Giza, however, there were many different Sphinx and the cult of the Sphinx continued into medieval times. The statues were given the name ‘Sphinx about 2,000 years ago after the commonly accepted date of construction of the Great Sphinx of Giza and is a reference to a mythological Greek beast. The Sphinx had many guises, some with the head of a woman, falcon, cat, or a sheep and the body of a lion, many with wings of an eagle.
