As part of the 3rd Brigade, the 83rd Pennsylvania was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Captain Orpheus S. Woodward. Its colonel, Strong Vincent, was in overall command of the undersized brigade. At Little Round Top, an undefended, boulder-strewn hillside on the far left of the Union line, the 83rd was set between the 44th New York on its right and the 20th Maine to its left. At about 4:30 p.m. they faced the first rush from the 4th Alabama and elements of the 5th Texas of General Evander Law’s brigade. The Confederates were somewhat hampered by the rough terrain but pushed through nonetheless mounting several determined attacks up the slope. The Federal line wavered but held through the difficult fighting. By 6:00 p.m. the Rebel forces were repulsed.
