Of the 880,000 Southerners mobilized to fight for the Confederacy, 94,000 were killed in action outright or mortally wounded. Virginia suffered the most with 31,000 with Alabama next with 27,000 – only 1,000 Floridians died on the battlefield. A wholly accurate count will almost certainly never be made and Southern losses were probably much higher. And these number do not account for death from disease. Research has shown that soldiers from rural areas were more susceptible to disease and died at a higher rate than city dwellers. The Confederate Army had a higher percentage of farm boys.
