54mm Painted Metal Miniature

Made in Russia

This is a miniature of the final fight between two Roman gladiators.  The Murmillo is about to deliver the final blow to the Retarius. Roman gladiators were professional fighters who engaged in hand-to-hand combat for the entertainment of the Roman audiences, typically in large ampitheatres like the Colosseum. There were multiple types of gladiators. The Murmillow were heavily armoured gladiators, armed with a gladius (64–81 cm long) and a tall, oblong shield in the legionary style. The Retairius ("net fighter") developed in the early Augustan period. He carried a trident and a net, equipment styled on that of a fisherman.
