The conflict between Ancient Egypt and Assyria reached its peak in the 7th century BCE, when the Neo-Assyrian Empire under kings Esarhaddon and Ashurbanipal launched a series of invasions into Egypt, then ruled by the Kushite pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty. Esarhaddon's forces captured the Egyptian capital of Memphis around 671 BCE, and after a Kushite-led revolt, Ashurbanipal's armies pushed further south, sacking the ancient religious center of Thebes around 663 BCE in one of the most devastating blows to Egyptian prestige in its long history.
