Major Richard Ira "Dick" Bong (September 24, 1920 – August 6, 1945) was the leading American flying ace of World War II, credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft while flying the Lockheed P-38 Lightning in the Southwest Pacific theater between 1942 and 1945. As a highly decorated officer and Medal of Honor recipient, he was known as the "Ace of Aces" and was noted for his aggressive combat tactics.
