Alonzo Cushing stood steadfast with his 4th US battery at the Angle as the high water mark of the Confederacy came cascading over the low stonewall, then ebbed away as Lee's great gamble, Pickett's charge, failed, bringing to a close the Battle of Gettysburg. Cushing was mortally wounded and held up by his loyal 1st Sergeant Frederick Fuger, who issued his commands for him until the very end.
