The .30 caliber Browning M1919 machine gun was used widely as a light infantry weapon, a vehicle mount, aircraft and anti-aircraft gun throughout World War II. The original model proved too cumbersome for the intended two man team, requiring in practice four men to operate it in combat. The gun was revised three times before widespread distribution, and the M1919A4 weighed only 31 lbs and could be operated and carried by a single soldier if necessary.
