Carousel #6051 "Rawlings" Nieuport 17

1/48th Scale, Measures approximately 4.75" nose-to-tail x 6.75" wingspan

Carousel 1 is proud to announce models licensed by the movie FLYBOYS. FLYBOYS is directed by Tony Bill ("Crazy People," "Untamed Heart"), produced by Dean Devlin ("Independence Day," "The Patriot," "Stargate") of Electric Entertainment, and distributed by MGM. The real Lafayette Escadrille flew silver Nieuport 17's with a Seminole chief insignia, as portrayed in the movie. In France, RAWLINGS, Eugene SKINNER (Abdul Salis), and other American volunteers are trained to fly before being sent into combat with the Lafayette Escadrille under veteran Reed CASSIDY (Martin Henderson). Their chief adversaries are German pilots flying Fokker Triplanes, led by the black airplane of the BLACK FALCON and the red CROSSED SWORDS.

American James Franco (Blaine RAWLINGS) starred in "Annapolis," "The Great Raid, and "Tristan and Iseult" and is featured in the "Spiderman" movies. RAWLINGS' character is a rancher turned combat pilot whose heroic career forms the center of FLYBOYS. RAWLINGS' Nieuport 17 carries a "double R" brand as a personal insignia.

Designed as an improvement upon the Nieuport 11, the Model 17 was first flown in January 1916. This French-built fighter was more powerful and more refined than the Nieuport 11, and its rate of climb and maneuverability were superior for its time. The Nieuport 17 had a wide top wing and a narrower lower wing, which made it more of a "sesquiplane" than a biplane ("one and a half wings"). Its single-spar construction meant that the lower wing was weak and prone to disintegrating in flight-but this weakness didn't stop the Nieuport 17 from going on to become one of the most successful fighters of WWI.
