Del Prado SNC005 Officer, British 1st Life Guards, 1815

The Household Cavalry constituted a rather unique part of the British Army, being both the senior element of the cavalry, and also the Kings royal bodyguard. Although their history could be traced to the gentlemen who followed King Charles II into exile after the English Civil War, the existing troops of Horse Guards or Life Guard of Horse had been reorganized in 1788 into ordinary regiments to form the 1st and 2nd Life Guards.
Until 1788 all privates in the troops of Horse Guards were still styled gentlemen and the corporals were commissioned officers, called Captains in the warrants. On 8 June 1788 the old 1st and 2nd Troops of Horse Guards and the troops of Horse Grenadier Guards were disbanded and re-formed as the 1st and 2nd Regiments of Life Guards.
