Prussia's most celebrated ruler of the 18th century was Frederick II, known to posterity as Frederick the Great (r. 1740-86). It was Frederick who bequeathed to Prussia a culture of militaristic order with which it is still associated. But by the end of the 18th century Fredericks theories of war were long outdated, and the performance of Prussian cavalry in the face of Napoleons armies failed to stand up to their reputation.
