Del Prado SNC077 Trooper, 2nd Dutch-Belgian Cavalry Regiment, 1801

The Netherlands (or the Low Countries) have been for centuries the arena in which contending European powers have sought to achieve martial decisions, however remote this theatre of war may have been from their homelands. Hence, in the period leading up to the Napoleonic era modern Holland was the Spanish Netherlands, Belgium the Austrian Netherlands.

In 1794, having executed King Louis XVI, revolutionary France overran the Austrian Netherlands, and these provinces remained part of France until 1815. In the same year the French general Charles Pichegru invaded the Spanish Netherlands (Holland), and founded the Batavian Republic under French protection.
