Del Prado SNC060 Lt. General Sir John Moore, 1809

The British retreat to Corunna and Vigo was one of the worst prolonged trials endured by the British army in the Peninsula, conducted over mountainous terrain, in bitter winter weather and in a ragged and shoeless condition. Late in 1808 Lt. General Sir John Moore had found himself virtually alone with his small British army deep inside Spain. The armies of his Spanish allies had been overwhelmed and he faced a victorious French force under the Emperor Napoleon.
Moores army was not just the largest that Britain had in the field, it was virtually the only army available. Moore was acutely conscious, as the 19th century historian William Napier commented, that the very heart, the pith of the military power of his country was in his keeping [and] was entrusted to his prudence, and it is against this huge responsibility that all Moores actions should be gauged.
