Del Prado SNC076 Corporal, British 10th Hussars, 1815

In the campaigns of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the deserved reputation of the British infantry has tended to overshadow the contribution of the cavalry. The armys mounted branch was not large: reckoning rank and file only, and excluding artillery, in 1794 the cavalry represented 17 per cent of the army (14,500 men out of 85,000), rising to 23 per cent by 1795. After the renewal of the war in 1803 the percentage declined, 12.5 per cent in 1805 (20,000 out of 162,000 including artillery), and 11.3 per cent by September 1813 (30,000 out of 270,000).

When the militia is included as part of the force permanently under arms, the percentage of cavalry is reduced further, for example 8 per cent in 1805 and 9 per cent in September 1813. From 1807 the number of cavalry remained fairly constant, between 26,000 and 30,000.
