Del Prado SNC096 Prussian Horse Artillery, 1806

The system of light and manoeuvrable 3-pounder, 6-pounder and 12-pounder field guns had been introduced by Austria at the beginning of the Seven Years War in 1756, and had proved so successful that the other powers had soon copied it.

Frederick the Great of Prussia had taken the Austrian innovations one step further by developing an ultra-light 6-pounder galloper gun. Galloper guns had been employed with the cavalry arm for some time, but this new piece was soon adopted by most European countries and eventually led to the development of the distinct horse artillery. These formations employed a lighter piece of the existing calibre, sacrificing weight and impact of projectile, and to some degree range, in the interest of speed. Thus light 6-pounders, and light field howitzers were cast by most countries in addition to their other pieces.
