Del Prado SNC109 French Chasseur a Cheval, 1805

In 1804, with the creation of the Empire, Napoleon had reintroduced former royalist honorary appointments such as the ranks of marshal and colonel general. An officer with the latter title was appointed to practically every arm in the Line cavalry.

Napoleons younger brother Louis, the future King of Holland, received the honorary rank of Colonel-General to the Corps of Carabiniers, General Gouvion Saint-Cyr was appointed to the Cuirassiers, General Baraguay dHilliers the Dragoons, General Marmont the Chasseurs Cheval, General Junot the Hussars and Marshal Bessis the cavalry of the Imperial Guard.

During the ceremonies marking Napoleons coronation the army was represented by small delegations from each regiment. The former Consular Guard, now elevated to Imperial status, acted as escort to the newly crowned Emperor.
