The Lone Star Flag carried by the regiment was lost in the carnage of Miller's forty acre cornfield in Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 1862. Eight standard bearers were killed and casualties for the First Texas totaled over 80%. Private Samuel Johnson of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves captured the colors. The flag was returned to Texas in 1905.
