At the time of the Alamo, the Mexican Army consisted of 10 permanent infantry battalions comprised of long-service professional, volunteers and draftees. Many had served under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Zacatecas rebellion of 1835. In 1836, Santa Anna marched his advance guard of 2,000 north to supress the rebellion in Texas.
