The British had won a series of victories in the later stages of the French and Indian War, allowing an attack on Quebec from the river by way of the Atlantic. The French General Montcalm who had defeated the British in many engagements previously, had the command in Quebec. After a siege, the British and French fought on the Plains of Abraham in a battle that lasted around 15 minutes and which resulted in a decisive victory for the British.
