REN016

First Legion

At the Battle of Pavia in 1525, Georg von Frundsberg won his most famous victory as a Landsknecht commander. This figure represents the man himself, part of the command group along with REN014-REN017. It was at the Battle of Pavia that von Fundsberg captured the French King, effectively ensuring Habsburg rule of Italy for the next 200 years.

The Renaissance era spanned the 14th-17th Centuries, during which art, science, exploration, and literature made a great resurgence. Not all was civilized however, as the great continental powers of Europe bloodily vied for control of the continent; their militaries warred with each other. Gunpowder and cannon became more reliable, and less apt to explode unexpectedly. Heavy cavalry and foot soldiers were the most common troops, and the pike and musket were the most common armaments in Renaissance armies. It is often referred to as the "Age of Pike and Shot" for this reason.
