Napoleons Imperial Guard was one of the most famous military formations in history. It could perform ceremonial duties as well as any, but it was primarily an te combat formation of the army. By supplying personnel to other units, it provided a training school for the remainder of the army, and although it expanded to represent a considerable portion of Frances military establishment, it remained Napoleons personal guard, and was accorded special care and attention that set its members above the rest of the army.
Whatever the merits of using the Guard as a training ground for officers and NCOs of the line, its disadvantage was that it damaged the line units. The selection of the best conscripts deprived the line of much of its most promising material. Men who had already distinguished themselves, and whose presence would have enhanced line units, could hardly be refused the honour.
