Del Prado SNC061 Officer, Hesse-Darmstadt Chevauleger, 1790

Both German principalities of Hessen-Kassel and Hessen-Darmstadt fought against France in the Revolutionary Wars. Subsequently Hessen-Kassel made peace with France in 1795 at Basle.

After Austrias defeat at the battle of Hohenlinden on 3 December 1800, there was a power vacuum in the area now known as Germany, which at the time consisted of dozens of tiny, independent states loosely linked to Austria as part of the old Holy Roman Empire. Bonaparte quickly grasped the opportunity to create a pro-French buffer zone between France and her traditional enemies in central Europe, and Hessen-Darmstadt duly allied herself with France in 1801 at Luneville.
