Del Prado SNC092 Officer, Burgos Hussars, 1813-1814

The original guerrilla appeared in Spain from 1808, since when the word has entered many languages to denote a particular type of rather savage warfare. For the most part the guerrillas of the Peninsular War were ordinary men, nearly always of humble circumstances, who had little knowledge of the great principles of the Art of War. But, although often poor and illiterate, he was proud, deeply loved his country and, as he could not stand the gross misconduct of arrogant foreign soldiers, he took up arms. Far from being cowed by the bloody repression of occupation by their French allies, the Spanish rose up against their oppressors. People everywhere patriotically rose against the worlds finest army. Some of the most important guerrilla bands operated in the northern mountains and in the plains of Leon and Castile.
