This tanker wears the typical configuration of the U.S. Army Winter Combat Uniform. Introduced in 1942, this is a second pattern issued: Trousers, Combat, Winter were bib and brace overall style pants with a cotton outer, lined in wool. Their warmth and comfort made them the most popular design seen in WWII. Over that is his winter combat jacket, which eventually became known as a “Tanker Jacket.” Soldiers that were assigned to tank, reconnaissance, and armored infantry units needed heavy-duty cold weather gear as armored vehicles had no heating. All of the services developed an affinity for this jacket due to its thermal protection and ease of wearing. His soft head cover was produced using the same thermal protective materials as the jacket and trousers.
