The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was established in 1920 with the amalgamation of the Royal North-West Mounted Police and the Dominion Police and serves as the national police service of Canada. The RCMP’s primary responsibility is the enforcement of federal criminal law but also provides police services to eight of Canada’s provinces (all except Ontario and Quebec) and all three of Canada’s territories. In June 1953, the RCMP became a full member of the International Criminal Police Organization, more commonly known as Interpol. In order to respond to serious incidents that required a tactical police reaction, the RCMP formed 31 part-time Emergency Response Teams and in 1986 established a full-time counter-terrorism unit: the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT).
