Military Gifts
The massive S-42, built in 1933 and first taking flight in 1934, was Sikorsky's response to Pan Am's call for a transatlantic passenger airliner. Ultimately, however, despite the aircraft's impressive 1,100-mile range, it was unable to successfully make long-haul flights over the ocean and was used instead to fly travelers to South America in half the time of its typical competitors. The flying boat design was ideal, given the lack of airfields available to commercial airliners of the era and the relatively easy access to rivers and harbors.
This limited edition print depicts one of the first S-42s, of which only ten were manufactured, flying over Rio De Janeiro in August of 1934. Señora Getúlio Vargas, wife of the Brazilian president, christened the impressive model the "Brazilian Clipper."
Limited edition print is signed and numbered by the artist, Stan Stokes.
