Father Gleeson, The Last Absolution of the Munster Fusiliers, 1915

Price: $475.00

Ballantynes

Special Order Item

Father Francis Gleeson, Catholic Priest of the Dublin Archdiocese, volunteered in 1915 to be an Army Chaplain. He was posted to the Western Front as Chaplain to the Munster Fusiliers and served with them for only a year. The Artist Fortunio Matania, in his well known painting, captured the most poignant of moments as Father Gleeson gave the Last Absolution to the Battalion at the Rue du Bois the evening before many of them were killed or wounded. This fine 8" scale statuette of Father Gleeson was originally commissioned by the Principal Roman Catholic Chaplain to the Army. The overall height of the mounted figurine is 11 ½ " from the hooves of the horse to the top of Father Gleeson's head.
