King & Country's AR035 Standing Flagbearer

1st New York Regiment

On June 15, 1775 the Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, appointed George Washington of Virginia to Commander in Chief of the combined volunteers of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

This small force was to become the nucleus of America's first national army.

From this motley host, Washington began to bring order and organization. It was autumn of 1775 before the new army was truly formed - a Continental Army of just 26 regiments of infantry, one of riflemen and just one of artillery.
