Goshawk on Pheasant

Price: $1,100.00

This is the second of the large scale sculptures by Alan Hayman and is of a Goshawk with its prey, a dead pheasant. The life in the sculpture is remarkable and Ballantynes of Walkerburn takes great pride in its production. It is sculpted at 2/3rd full scale which makes the piece very large. It is available in a warm bronze finish or as a hand painted sculpture.

The Goshawk is a large raptor, almost reaching buzzard size. When seen close up it has a fierce expression with bright red eyes and a distinctive white eyebrow. Its broad wings enable it to hunt at high speed, weaving in and out of trees, and its long legs and talons can catch its prey while the raptor is in flight. The Goshawk shows sexual dimorphism; the female is substantially larger than the male. In late winter and spring mating pairs have a stunning 'sky-dance' display. Goshawks are still persecuted and their nests are frequently robbed by specimen collectors and for exotic pet sales.

Best looked for near large areas of woodland and forests with glades and paths for it to hunt along. Can also be seen hunting over more open countryside. In the United States, Goshawks are mainly seen in northern climes, but migrate south for winter.
