Battle of the Alma


Fought September 20, 1854 at the Crimea in the Ukraine by British,
French, and Turkish forces against the Russian Army.

Battle of Balaclava


October 25, 1854. This battle included the "Thin Red Line", the Charge of
the Heavy Brigade and the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Battle of Inkerman


British & French victory over the Russians on November 5, 1854.

Siege of Sevastopol


The siege which included trench warfare that foreshadowed WWI.
The siege lasted a year from September 1854 to 1855.

C. Usherwood's Diary

"This Journal relates to the period of Army service (1852 to 1856) of
Charles William Usherwood, born 1831, the fourth of ten children of a
glass maker in Worsbrodale, Rotherham, Yorks.   His parents died in
1848 and 1850, by which time he seems to have become a grocer's
assistant, but at the age of 20 enlisted as a private soldier in the 19th Foot."

William Simpson (1823-1899)

British pictorial correspondent who painted scenes
of the Crimean War. A biographical site. He is " known today as the
war artist whose first-hand depiction of the Crimean War helped bring
home the reality of that ill-managed campaign to the British public
