Napoleonic Wars
Cuthbert Collingwood and Nelson had been life-long friends before they fought together at Trafalgar in 1805. They originally met whilst both were still midshipmen, and when in 1778, Nelson was appointed Commander of a new ship it was a young Lieutenant Collingwood who took over his old command.
Although Collingwood lacked Nelson's flair and genius, he was greatly respected throughout the fleet. After Nelson's death at Trafalgar he took command for the final stages of the battle.
On 21st October 1805 a British Fleet under the command of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson not only destroyed the combined fleets of France and Spain, but with it Napoleon's dreams of invading Britain.
The Battle of Trafalgar was the most important naval engagement of the Napoleonic Wars, however the great victory was nearly overshadowed by national mourning at the loss of Lord Nelson, killed at the height of the battle on board his flagship HMS Victory.
